Antonio Ruiz Pipó

Born: 1934 Died: 1997

Ruiz-Pipó underwent his general and music education at the Escolanía de Nuestra Señora de la Merced in Barcelona. He studied piano for four years at the Academia Marshall in Barcelona under the direction of Alicia de Larrocha, and his composition and general music studies were with Joseph Cercós.

In 1948 he joined the Círculo Manuel de Falla, the first group of young composers in Spain, and the next year he was awarded the Manuel de Falla scholarship by the Granada City Council. In 1950 he made his piano debut and a year later he underwent a concert tour of Barcelona and Andalusia before setting off for Paris, financed by the French Government.

Once in Paris, he began studying at the École Normale de Musique de París, where he completed his studies under Alfred Cortot and Jean Françaix. He gained a diploma in performance, a superior licence in teaching and in concert performance.

Ruiz-Pipó performed concerts in the main European capitals and taught at the Sweeelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam, the National Conservatory of Prague, the Akademie für Musik und Darstellende kunst of Vienna, the École Normale de Musique of París, and in Tokyo. He was a teacher and advisor in the Conservatories la Ville de Paris and pedagogy advisor and teacher in the École Nationale de Musique et Danse of Chateauroux (Indre, France). He was also teacher of music aesthetics in the École Normale de Musique. In 1962 he created the Bomaguil Festival (France).

Ruiz-Pipó’s music is most definitely Spanish and, more specifically, Andalusian with a marked influence from Manuel de Falla, a composer whom he tried to emulate within a wide range of expression. He also made use of other sources such as Spanish popular music and historical periods, particularly Baroque and vihuela music.
