Programme Note
Elegy for viola and cello was written in April 1970 for Peter Mark and Geoffrey Rutlowski while the composer was guest professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara. It grew from one simple, initial idea, a rather sombre chord heard at the outset. But this soon leads to a more dramatic and virtuosic style of music, mostly written in a freer type of notation, to encourage the two performers to play in a more soloisitic way.
