Programme Note
Textures was commissioned by David Titterington for a collection of new pieces (Organ-Works! - Volume 1) in which each composition explores and develops a particular performance-related skill. Often such etudes involve intricate counterpoint and fast-moving figuration; in this piece I have worked in the opposite direction, trying to achieve something very subtle. Textures requires very delicate playing, making the most of the sonorities achieved through the overlaying of 4ths, 5ths and 6ths; the pedal is used as a textural device, rather than underpinning preparation to a cadence or coda.
