Spain’s most acclaimed living composer, Alberto Iglesias received early musical training in piano, guitar, composition and counterpoint, as well as electronic music studies. His considerable contribution to film composition began in 1980.

A composer for the concert hall (orchestra, ensemble and string quartet), Alberto Iglesias’ work also includes original scores for dancer/choreographer Nacho Duato and his National Dance Company. He wrote and produced Cautiva (1992), Tabulae (1994), Cero Sobre Cero (1995) and Self (1997), all of which were performed worldwide.

He has enjoyed a long, fruitful partnership with Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, producing such films as The Flower of My Secret, Live Flesh, All About my Mother, Talk to Her, Bad Education, Volver and Broken Embraces. Further collaborations with film directors include Julio Médem (Vacas, La ardilla roja, Tierra, Los amantes del Círculo Polar, Sex and Lucia), Iciar Bollain (Take my eyes), Bigas Luna (La camarera del Titanic) and Carlos Saura (Dispara).

Iglesias has written for major US productions and has been acclaimed for his work with leading Hollywood figures such as Oliver Stone (Comandante), John Malkovich (The Dancer Upstairs), Fernando Meirelles (The Constant Gardener), and Marc Foster (The Kite Runner).

He was awarded the European Film Award for Best Original Soundtrack in 2006 for Volver and the World Soundtrack Award for Soundtrack Composer of the Year and Best Original Soundtrack of the Year (Flanders International Film Festival, Ghent) as well as his nominations for both an Academy Award and BAFTA for The Constant Gardener. He won the 2008 Satellite Award for Best Original Soundtrack for The Kite Runner, and furthermore received nominations for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for second time. He has also been awarded nine Goyas and numerous other European accolades.

Recent scores include the two films of Steven Soderbergh’s biopic about Ernesto Guevara’s life, Che El Argentino and Che Guerrilla, Almodovar’s latest film Broken Embraces, and collaborations with Icíar Bollaín (También La Lluvia) and Dominik Moll (Le Moine).

Alberto Iglesias “Best Composer” in the European Films Awards 2012

UME composer Alberto Iglesias received the EFA Award (European Films Awards) last Saturday night in La Valetta (Malta) for his outstanding work in the soundtrack of the motion picture “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”. It is his fifth nomination and the third time he receives this prestigious award of European cinema. In 2006 he received it for the soundtrack of Volver and in 2009 for The Broken Embraces.

Alberto Iglesias could not attend to the ceremony, but thanked the Swedish director Tomas Alfredson, to whom he was very close during the process of composition.

The Spanish composer is now working on a further collaboration with Pedro Almodóvar. The result will be the soundtrack of the film, Los amantes pasajeros, which is currently on post-production.
