• The atmosphere is expectant and charged. There is electricity in every second, making the listener curious about what will happen next… The density of events, at the limits of the human capacity to grasp them, combines with sections that go round and round repeatedly, which is both irritating and provocative. But it was precisely because of this element of provocation, Szymanski’s way of guying the audience’s expectations, that the clarinet quintet left many tastes in the mouth, both sweet and bitter.
