Balancing the Books, presumably named for the venue, is a ten-minute encounter between slowly shifting harmonies and quick syncopated overlays. No words: the [Swingle Singers] use their own syllables. With its busy, ringing textures, its sudden halts and lyrical flowerings, it makes one of Nyman's most concise and lucid inventions.
