Programme Note
SYNOPSIS In this romantic tale of love winning the day against all odds, Hugh fights a boxing match with John for the hand of Mary. In a small English town in 1812, Mary is engaged to John the Butcher, but when a stranger – Hugh the Drover – arrives in town, she falls in love with him. The two men challenge each other to a fight, which Hugh wins, but John accuses Hugh of being a French spy. Hugh is arrested and put in the stocks until he is recognised by a Sergeant who sets him free and conscripts John into the army.
