Programme Note
I wrote this work as a response to the Latin word Lacrimae - 'the tears'. For me this does not suggest an absolute grief, but a bittersweet sorrow, and a longing for paradise. J.T.

In celebrating the 400th anniversary of Dowland's [Lachrimae], Mark Levy commissioned seven complementary pieces ... to comprise The New Lachrimae. Sir John Tavener contributes the grave litanies and, for him, unusually chromatic lines of his Lacrimae, before Dowland's last two pavanes wind the sequence down to silence. For once, this proves an interlinking of old and new that genuinely worked.
