Programme Note

Flicker was commissioned (and titled) by Shobana Jeyasingh for the second of our dance collaborations in 2005. Four our first collaboration, Miniatures, I had suggested using a string quartet, which became my second quartet in 1998, but for Flicker Shobana insisted on ‘stretching’ me by suggesting an electronic score which was brilliantly and indispensably realised by Jurgen Simpson. In the dance work a live electric guitar is combined with the electronics, while for this concert version I have invited Cassie Yukawa and Rosey Chan, in the spirit of the 70s, to assemble materials related to the written and recorded versions of my 1-100 of 1976 (released on the Obscure label) in a free association with the electronic track.
