Alexander Goehr is a very old frined, who was also my Professor in the Faculty of Music at Cambridge. We are exact contemporaries and both retired in the same year 1999. We then exchanged musical presents. Long ago, he had given me a volume of the poems of Erich Fried (himself an old friend of his), which I found very sympathetic. I thought it would be a good idea to choose some of them to offer to him. They were set in February and March of 2000, and dedicated to Alexander Goehr. They were performed by Andrew Kennedy at the Austrian Institute in March 2001.
