Programme Note

This carol was first published in William Sandys' 1833 'Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern', but probably dates back to medieval times.

The words are those of Christ, describing the events of His life, 'the legend of my play'. 'My dancing day' regers to His birthday; 'my true love' refers to His church and His people.
