Programme Note

A ballet based on Dumas’ classic tale set in seventeenth century Paris. Music by Malcolm Arnold with choreography by David Nixon. Score compiled by Anthony Meredith and orchestrated by John Longstaff. First performed at the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, on 23 September 2006 by Northern Ballet Theatre.

Reviews

  • The chorography is at its best in the elegant love duets between the Queen and Buckingham, contrasted with the young, sometimes awkward love of d'Artagnan and Constance.
The production of David Nixon's ballet is deservedly a hit.
    Stuart Sweeney, Dance Europe, 01/12/2009
  • It is Arnold's cinematic soundtrack that makes this ballet a sweeping drama....
    Lyndesy Winship, Daily Telegraph, 27/09/2009
  • This feather-trimmed, swashbuckling romp is light and sunny, with spiffing sets, a composite score by Malcolm Arnold, and crisp, neat dancing. There are good baddies and great moustaches, and sword fights that will knock socks off.
Sarah Frater, London Evening Standard, 06/06/2007
  • …it’s good to report that [Arnold’s] music – lively, tuneful, fast-paced or romantic – drives the action and fits the bill with great success. And it is delightful to recognise the English Dances – even though we are supposed to be in 17th-century France.
David Dougil, The Sunday Times, 01/10/2006
