Programme Note

This short choral work was written to celebrate the 25th season (2012-2013) of The New York Virtuoso Singers.

Each of its two short phrases start on a single note (middle C) and grow outwards to a widely spaced chord. The music thus reflects life going ab ovo to the rich experience of old age. It is dedicated to Harold Rosenbaum.

For age is opportunity no less
Than youth itself, though in another dress,
And as the evening twilight fades away
The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day.

This poem by Henry Longfellow is an excerpt from a long poem entitled
Morituri Salutamus.
