Paul Mealor’s Ubi caritas stands out by virtue of its difficulty and for using a text suitable for singing on other occasions, not least on Maundy Thursday. It sounded splendid in Westminster Abbey performed by the combined choirs of the Abbey and Chapel Royal, but be warned if you are thinking of offering it for this year’s wedding season that tenors and basses between them divide into up to five parts, and first and second sopranos need to be able to hold an interval of a semitone comfortably between them on several occasions.
