Thomas Hyde’s ‘As a Lily among Thorns’ was composed as a wedding present on, appropriately, a text taken from the Song of Songs. It would make a pleasing alternative to settings of ‘Set me as a seal’ by Walton and others, for a discerning, musical couple planning their nuptials with a competent SATB choir in attendance.

[Uses] gratifyingly limited vocal ranges and creates its lilting effect through subtly undulating metre.
