Jonathan Bridcut ‘Why, O Lord, do you stand far off?’ is an intense piece (SATB divisi) in memory of those who died in the July 2005 bombings in London. Using verses taken from Psalm 10, it asks the question posed by so many victims of disasters and outrages over the past century. A simple motto theme, “Why do you stand far off?” recurs at focal points throughout the work. The anguish in the words is reflected with some telling climax points but there is some consolation at the end with SA solo lines superimposed on the chorus. The question is left hanging in the air, however, as the alto soloist finishes the piece on an unresolved supertonic.
