‘Out of the South Cometh the Whirlwind’… was awarded a 2011 King James Bible Composition Award. Scored for SATB divisi, with treble solo and an organ part with detailed registrations, the text is selected from the Book of Job (KJV). The opening section proclaims “the wond’rous works of God”, set against Job’s insignificance. In the middle section a gentle, questioning treble solo leads into the final celebration of God’s omnipotence and the anthem sinks to a completative ending with a resolution on a C major chord played PPP.

A highly imaginative and compelling addition to the choir and organ repertoire and it would serve as an unusually dramatic and arrest anthem at Evensong.
