Programme Note

I saw Eternity was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, Hans-Joachim Lustig and Männerstimmen der Chorknaben Uetersen.

I saw Eternity the other night
Like a great Ring of pure and endless light,
All calm, as it was bright,
And round beneath it, Time in hours, days, years
Driv'n by the spheres
Like a vast shadow mov'd, in which the world
And all her train were hurl'd.
From The World

Henry Vaughan (1621-1695)

Performance instructions:

The work may be performed with or without soprano saxophone.
The choir should surround the audience, like a 'ring of sound'.
The suspended metal wind chimes are to be placed among the choir and may be
performed by members of the choir or percussionists. Gentle waves of sound, at four
independent tempi, are desired.
Duration: circa 4 minutes.
The score is transposed.
