Welcome to the Chester / Novello Hire Library, one of the leading commercial hire libraries in the world.  The library contains a large collection of orchestral music, including operas, ballets and choral works.  Performance materials are despatched to orchestras and choirs all over the world, either direct or via one of our Hire Agents. Please feel free to browse the website for a composer or work using one of the search functions.  If you wish to order materials, please see below for more details. 

 

HOW TO ORDER

 

The Chester/Novello Hire Library requires ALL orders to be confirmed in writing, allowing at least one month’s advance notice before materials are required in order to receive the most efficient service.  For customers outside the UK, please see our Hire Agents section to find out whom to contact.  For further guidance, amateur societies may wish to view the Guidelines for Amateur Hire on the Music Publishers Association website: www.mpaonline.org.uk (under the Printed Music section).

           

There are various methods of placing an order:


1. Hire using a Word Form (recommended). Please download the form and complete on screen. Then attach the form to an email and send to hire@musicsales.co.uk Click here to download form.

(Please note that this form is not suitable for orders for Andrew Lloyd Webber shows. Please refer to guidelines in the Stage Works section below.)

2. Write / fax / e-mail, giving the following details:

- The name and status (professional, amateur etc.) of the performers
-
The name and full address of the organisation being invoiced (if different from above) 
-  A clear indication of the address to which the materials is to be sent and, if different, the address to which the invoice should be sent
- The composer, title and edition (if applicable) of the work        
- The identity of excerpts if the entire work is not being performed
- The number, date(s) and venue(s) of performances
- The name of the conductor and soloists (if relevant)
- The exact number of string parts required (by desk). Please note that orchestral sets normally comprise a small set (with strings 54332) or a large set (with strings 87654
- The total number of vocal scores (if relevant)
- The date of delivery of materials and the duration of the hire (by month)
- Details of any broadcast or recording to be made of the performance
- Your VAT Registration number (if the territory you are in is a member of the EC)

Quotes are not available online, but can be obtained either over the phone or via email. If emailing, please provide us with the details outlined above in the “How to Order” section and we will be happy to supply you with a quote as soon as possible.

STAGE WORKS

 

For operas, ballets, musicals and other stage works, including live accompaniment to a film, a completed ‘grand right’ licence is required before materials can be despatched. Please contact our Copyright Department in this respect.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF HIRE


1. DELIVERY NOTE - On receipt of goods, please check IMMEDIATELY that all materials correspond to what is stated on the delivery note overleaf.  Notify us at once if there are any errors or omissions;
2. PERUSAL MATERIALS – These are loaned out for a period of two months and must be returned within that time.  Any extension of the loan period must be agreed with the Hire Library in writing.  Failure to do so may incur charges at full replacement costs;
3. POSTAGE – The hirer will be liable for all postage costs incurred in fulfilling this order;
4. CANCELLATION – A cancellation charge will be levied on any material despatched.  If the order has been received and processed, but not despatched, a cancellation charge of 10% of the hire fee will be levied;
5.

RETURN OF GOODS - The hirer is responsible for the return of materials as supplied at their own expense.  Materials should be packed securely and returned by ‘recorded delivery’ or some other secure method within fourteen days of the last performance; failure to do so will incur overdue hire fees at £15.00 per overdue week.  Parcels should contain identification of the hirer and all materials should be complete and in good condition; the hirer will be liable for all loss or damage to the materials howsoever caused (see Clause 6 below).

6. MISSING/DEFACED MATERIAL – A charge will be made for any missing or defaced material at full replacement cost.  This includes marking in biro, coloured pen, highlighter pen or the obliteration of text or music;
7. SUPPLY OF MATERIAL TO A THIRD PARTY – The material is supplied solely for the performance(s) by or use of the hirer; it must not be lent, sold, re-hired or put to any other use;
8. CREDIT NOTES – No credit note will be issued once you have been invoiced;
9.

CONCERT PROGRAMMES – Two copies of the programme(s) acknowledging the composers and publishers of the work(s), must be supplied;

10. CONCERT TICKETS – Two complimentary tickets for the concert performance(s) shall be provided to the Publisher, upon request;
11. PERFORMANCE LICENCE – All performances of the material must be reported to the Performing Rights Society Ltd. or local equivalent.  The venue of performance must hold a valid and relevant licence issued by the Performing Rights Society Ltd. or local equivalent;
12. STAGE WORKS – The Performing Fees (Grand Rights) and all other conditions are laid down in a separate contract (see below);


Copyright Restrictions

The unauthorised adaptation, translation or copying of the material or the work(s) in whole or part by any method is illegal;

The performance(s) of the music work(s) must not be for, or subject to:

1. radio transmission, unless expressly agreed;
2. television broadcast by network, cable or satellite, unless expressly agreed;
3. mechanical reproduction, including recording, transcription (whether mechanically or electronically) or by any other sound carrier whether now or hereafter known, unless expressly agreed;
4. reproduction with visual images by any method including, but not limited to, video tapes, videodiscs, DVD or web streaming or by any other visual carrier whether now or hereafter known, unless expressly agreed;
5.

dramatic interpretation with any form of character representation, theatrical costuming, dramatic effects, actions and gestures, choreography, theatrical direction, props, scenery, dialogue or narrative (for Stage Works see above);

6. promotional or advertising purposes.
7. Any other use of the material whatsoever requires the prior written consent of the Publisher.
