The composer, drummer and installation artist Manos Tsangaris (*1956) receives the Music Prize of the Kunststiftung NRW - Mauricio Kagel Music Prize for 2024.

He is widely regarded as a prominent international representative in the realm of new music theater. He pursued his studies under Mauricio Kagel at the Cologne University of Music from 1976 to 1983. Since the 1970s, he has dedicated his efforts to exploring the intricacies of performance conditions as an essential subject of composition.

The Artistic Advisory Board states: ‘Manos Tsangaris is an artistic multiverse. If you try to pin him down to one particular genre, he immediately comes up with another: as a composer or poet, as a theatre maker, communications researcher, media, light or landscape artist - and sometimes all of these at the same time. Each time, however, his works create a world of their own, into which he invites us, the listeners and viewers, to enter. And this world in miniature always says a great deal in concentrated form, often with charming humour and sometimes almost as a side note, about the world into which his art then releases us.’

The prize includes a grant for the performance of a new work created for an ensemble from North Rhine-Westphalia.

The award ceremony will take place on May 7 at Kolumba Cologne, for invited guests.
