Britta Byström's violin concerto Shortening Days will premiere May 16.

Shortening Days is composed for renowned Dutch violinist, Janine Jansen, and commissioned jointly by NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

About the work, Byström says:

Composing for Janine Jansen has always been a dream for me and this piece was inspired by her expressive playing.

The music revolves around the evolving interplay between light and dark, mirroring the transition from day to night. As the composition unfolds, the light melodies gradually yield to darker orchestral tones, echoing the descent into nightfall.

Following its Stockholm premiere, Shortening Days will make its German debut November 21 at the Elbphilharmonie conducted by Sakari Oramo.
